My husband Andy is suffering from Decompensated cirrhosis is a severe stage of cirrhosis, where the liver's function is significantly compromised and complications arise. In this stage, the liver is unable to effectively filter blood and perform other vital functions, leading to a range of health issues.
Key characteristics of decompensated cirrhosis:
Portal hypertension: Increased pressure in the blood vessels around the liver, leading to complications like varices (swollen veins).
Ascites: Fluid buildup in the abdomen, causing swelling.
Hepatic encephalopathy: Brain dysfunction due to the liver's inability to process toxins.
Variceal bleeding: Bleeding from swollen veins in the digestive tract.
Other complications: May include spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (infection of the abdominal fluid) and hepatorenal syndrome (kidney failure).
Increased mortality: Decompensated cirrhosis significantly reduces life expectancy, with over half of patients dying within two years of diagnosis.
Liver transplantation: Liver transplantation can be a life-saving option for patients with decompensated cirrhosis, as the damage cannot be reversed.
In summary, decompensated cirrhosis is a serious condition characterized by liver dysfunction and complications, with a significantly reduced life expectancy. Liver transplantation is a crucial treatment option in these severe cases, according to the Mayo Clinic.
